01Using what is here

• Please do not republish an article whole under another name, or present our work as your own reporting. Quote it and link to it.
• Do not alter a quotation so that it says something we did not say, or attribute to us a claim this library does not make.
• If you are using anything here in a submission, a filing or a published article, read sources and method first. It tells you what each class of statement rests on and how far it can be pushed.
• Photographs and illustrations on this site are captioned as one or the other. An illustration is a rendering, not evidence, and should not be presented as a photograph of a real event.

02Material that is not ours

Parts of the historical record in this library descend from material published by the Montagnard Foundation, Inc. That archive is the Foundation's and its copyright is the Foundation's. We use it as a source — read, checked where checkable, rewritten in our own words and cited — and we do not republish it verbatim under our own name. If you want to use that underlying material rather than our article, the rights are the Foundation's to grant, not ours.

The same applies to everything else we cite: reports by Human Rights Watch, statements by United Nations bodies, published scholarship and news reporting all belong to the people who made them. Our links are not a licence to their work.

03Accuracy, and what to do about an error

We research everything we publish, we cite our sources, and we keep a standing list of what we cannot confirm at what we do not know. We still get things wrong.

If a date, a name, a figure or a spelling here is wrong, tell us. We will change it and say what changed. Corrections cost us nothing and improve the record, which is the only thing this site is for.

04This is not legal advice

Nothing on this site is legal advice and we are not your lawyers. The pages describing international instruments, penal code articles, asylum procedure or what to do when somebody is detained are written to help you understand a situation and record it usefully. They are not a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction, and you should not make a decision about your safety or your immigration status on the strength of them alone.

05Bringing us an account

• Send only what is yours to send, or what you have the consent of the people concerned to send.
• Do not name a person who has not agreed to be named. If a name is essential to the account, say so, and we will treat it as restricted.
• We will not publish anything identifying without consent. What happens to what you send is set out in our privacy policy, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
• If you are inside the Central Highlands or have family there, read reporting safely before you contact anybody, including us.

We may edit an account for length and clarity, and we may decline to publish it. We will not change what it says.

06The prisoner records

The names published in the prisoner records were given to us by families and congregations so that the people named would be harder to disappear. We do not add a name unless somebody asked us to.

07Accounts, tickets and donations

• Keep your account details to yourself, and tell us if you think somebody else has them.
• Give accurate contact information, so that we can reach you about something you raised.
• Donations are handled by our payment provider. If a donation was made in error, write to us and we will sort it out.
• We may suspend an account that is being used to abuse the site or the people who run it.

08What you may not do here

• Use the site to threaten, harass or endanger anybody.
• Send us material you know to be false, or fabricate an account.
• Attempt to gain access to accounts, systems or data that are not yours.
• Scrape, copy or mirror the site wholesale, or place automated load on it.
• Use anything here to build a profile of an individual.

09Links to other sites

We link to human rights reports, United Nations documents, news articles and scholarship because the record depends on them. We do not control those sites and we are not responsible for what they publish or for how they treat your data. A link is a citation, not an endorsement.

10Availability and liability

We run this site as carefully as a small organisation can. We cannot guarantee that it will always be available, that every link will keep working, or that every fact in a library of this size is free of error. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from your use of the site, and you rely on it at your own judgement. Nothing here limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

11Changes

If we change these terms we will date the change on this page. Continuing to use the site after that means accepting the revised terms.
