Where the evidence of our history is kept: the archives of the governments and armies that dealt with us, the mission libraries, the museums that hold our objects, the sound archives that hold our music, and the community organizations that keep what the institutions did not. Most can be searched online; many documents are free.
How to record an elder’s story
Most of our history was never written down. It is in the memories of people now in their seventies, eighties and nineties — in North Carolina, in Cambodia, in the highlands. When they die, it goes with them unless someone records it. This is a practical guide for families who want to do that, and who may want to share what they record with us.
