Pushed off, 1954–57
In 1954 the French lost and left. In 1955 Ngo Dinh Diem merged our country into the Republic of Vietnam. From 1956 his land development centres moved Vietnamese settlers onto highland soil in numbers our records put at around 850,000. No government objected, and the word the policy used for itself was assimilation.
The country itself
A plateau country of red basalt soil, forest and river valleys, between 500 and 1,500 metres above the sea, some 54,548 square kilometres of it. Its boundaries were drawn on 27 May 1946 by the colonial power itself — and the drawing left out the coast we had already been driven from.
